transliteration
[Article still incomplete]
Transformation of text from one script to another usually based on phonetic. The goal is that the transliterated text roughly sound like the original text.
Transliteration is language dependent. For example, The transliteration from Arabic to English will be different than from Arabic to French even so English and French both use Latin script.
We should also note that transliteration is also not an exact science and that the transformation tables may change over time which explains why some foreign name might have different spellings. |
