translation recycling
[Article still incomplete]
Term used to say that a previous translation has been reused in a different context. While it usually allow to cut cost, recycling can occassionaly be dangerous as there is no guarantees that the recycled text is indeed an accurate translation.
As a rather simple example say that we have to translate the following text fragment into French:
Phone number: None
Address: None
our translation memory contains the following entries:
Phone number: = Numéro de téléphone :
Address: = Adresse :
None = Aucun
the recycled translation will produce:
Numéro de téléphone : Aucun
Adresse : Aucun [error the translation of None in that context should be "Aucune"]
Most of todays translation memory engine are using recycling. The alternative to recycling is true reuse.
