text extraction

[Article still incomplete]

Process of isolating translatable text from a file. Data to translate often comes in a variety of formats (Word document, FrameMaker document, HTML file just to name a few)

This is usually an automatic task performed by CAT tools to either get a word count and/or allow the translation of the text without compromizing the document structure. The reverse operation is refered to as text merging.
