single-byte character set

A coded character set in which each character is represented by 1 byte. The character set is of course limited to 255 characters. Example of widelly used single-byte character set include ASCII (English), ISO 8859-1 (Western European Language), ISO 8859-6 (Arabic), ISO 8859-7 (Greek), ISO 8859-8 (Hebrew), ISO 8859-11 (Thai).
