Greenwich mean time

[Article still incomplete]

This time introduced in the mid 1800s is calculated at the Greenwich astronomical observatory in England. It corresponds approximatelly to the mean solar time in that observatory.

In Autum 1884 it was adopted as the Universal Time (UT). Because of the slight imperfection of the earth motion (it may fluctuate by a few thousands of a second a day), the atomic clock based Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) was introduced on January 1st, 1972. GMT is still widelly used today and is often refered to as UT1.
