EBCDIC

[Article still incomplete]

Acronym for Extended Binary-Coded Decimal Interchange Code. This 8-bit character set was defined in the 60s by IBM from Hollerith punch card conventions. This legacy can be felt as EBCDIC introduces some oddities such as non-continuous letter sequences (e.g. "i" as the code 0x89 while "j" as the code 0x91). Because half of the code points were not originally defined a lot of (incompatible) variants made their appearance.

EBCDIC is only used today in IBM's mainframe systems.
