diacritic

Mark added to a basic character, also called diacritical mark or diacritical. Commonly used diacritic are the accent marks in Latin script (acute, tilde, and ogonek) and the tone marks in Thai, etc...

In computing diacritic represent a few challenges: They may not be easy to type and people may easily omit them. There may be several ways to represents a base letter and a diacritic associated to it (as a single character or a sequence of character). As you may realize this may hinder the capabilities to do a successfull search for a particular term. Solutions to these issues involve normalization form and powerfull collation mechanism.
