computer aided translation
[Article still incomplete]
Computer Aided Translation (CAT) software is designed to increase translator efficiency. It should not be confused with machine translation where no human is involved. Functionality of such software usually include:
- text extractor/merger: separates the text to be translated from the code/formatting.
- terminology management: helps you create, maintain and use efficiently glossaries.
- translation memory engine: lets you reuse content that has already been translated.
- text alignment: lets you build translation memories from texts that have already been translated.
- word count: helps you determine the number of words contained in a set of document.
This list is certainly not exhaustive but covers the main functionality that one can expect in a professional CAT package.
