What is internationalization (aka i18n)?
In the context of this web site, internationalization is the art of preparing a system so it can be efficiently adapted for multiple locales or languages. The problem may seem trivial at first (just translate some stuff), but it really isn't as you might discover by visiting the sites in this directory.

What is the purpose of this site?
This site is mostly targetted at developers, project managers and localization engineers involved in internationalization efforts. It tries to provide some links to good up-to-date i18n information which is often hard to find. The evolution of the site will depend on the interest it receives. It may evolve from being a simple directory toward something like the excellent codeguru.com but dedicated to i18n (wouldn't just that make life easier?).

Who are you?
Thierry Sourbier, I have been working in the past for a major localization company then a globalization company in the US. I'm now back in France and I've taken the time to start this old project of mine. This site is not affiliated by any means with any of the player of the industry, and I hope that this site will remain that way to preserve its "open" nature.

Who are the gurus?
All those who have created the numerous i18n resources you can find on the web (and the many others working more quietly in the field). This web site tries to make their knowledge more accessible.

Is this site for-profit?
No, it isn't. The hosting and name registration come out at about $100/year and I can cover that without any venture capital :). If the site grows a lot and requires more resources (hence dollars) to run, I may need to put some banners but the intend is to keep it advertising free as long as possible!

What is the difference between i18ngurus.com and the dmoz.org project?
Unlike dmoz.org, which is a generalist directory, i18ngurus.com has a very narrow scope hence can better answer the community need. You also don't need to be a registered editor to add links to the directory. This will hopefully lead to more submissions. I've introduced a slightly better ranking mechanism (see below). I also hope to expand i18ngurus.com to include articles and i18n forums to make it a very lively place.

How sites are ranked?
When site are added they are given an average quality rating and an average relevance for each category they are submitted in. These parameters will be adjusted during the review process. The quality rating is based on the quantity of information found and the frequency of updates. The relevance is just an indication on how well it applies to the category.
When it comes to display the links a sorting is done based on (1) relevance score (2) quality (3) alphabetical order of title. Of course, relevance and quality are be very subjective but should ultimately lead to better search result.

Will this site be localized?
Localization of the site will be done if the site popularity justifies it and if some dedicated reviewers/moderators can be found for each target language. To be honest, this is not on the immediate agenda. This site does not intend to be a demo of a perfectly internationalized web site (at least not today :).
